The bike tour starts from Keszthely. We started from the Vince Bordás promenade, next to the train station. The promenade is part of the Balaton bike path. We leave the city towards Alsópáh, and we reach it after 8 kilometers of cycling. Here we are heading towards Sármellék.
The next settlement we touch is Zalavár. Further along the road we soon reach Balatonhídvég, where we cross the river Zala. Cycling further from the right hand, there is the Kányavári Island, which is worth a closer look.
Crossing Balatonagyaród, after 1.5 kilometers we turn left towards the Buffalo Reserve. From the Reservation our route leads among the buffaloes. However, we can only cross here if we buy the ticket! After the reservation, an excellent gravel road leads along the border of the strictly protected area up to Vörs. Tourists on this stretch are rarely seen, but we can see many birds and the special marshland.
The road is a pleasant alternative instead of the asphalt, but we have to take water with us, because we are in the nature.
From Vörs we are on the road again. At Balatonszentgyörgy we turn to Keszthely, and now we cycle back to the starting point on a bicycle path. On the way to Fenékpuszta, the Roman ruins (Valcum) and the bird ringing are definitely worth a stop. The bird ringing in Fenékpuszta is not operated by the NP but by the Hungarian Ornithological and Conservation Association (it is a shame that almost no public money is received). There is a 400-year-old customs house in Fenékpuszta, which currently operates as a pub.
